"Propaganda I’m Not Falling For" Trends on TikTok

From Labubu’s to Cybertruck’s, nothing is off limits…

Whether you’re in the U.S. or the U.K., sh-t’s getting real. So, what better way to deal with a political decline than by turning it into a joke? And with that enters the “Propaganda we’re not falling for” TikTok trend. If it’s been a while since your last history lesson, propaganda is “the spreading of ideas, information, or rumor for the purpose of helping or injuring an institution, a cause, or a person,” per Merriam-Webster. TikTok girlies, however, are taking it a step further.

On TikTok, creators tap into the trend by sharing their “Propaganda I’m not falling for” lists. One creator’s propaganda list featured “SkinnyTok, cringe culture, clean eating, fat shaming, the male loneliness epidemic, raw food diets,” and more fads that once dominated the app. Another user added “Cybertrucks” as she applied her lip gloss.

The trend has become a space for social commentary or the alternative… turning every girl into Joan Rivers — aka the Fashion Police. Essentially, it’s the new way to share your unpopular or polarizing hot take. Case and point, one woman stated Labubus as propaganda she wasn’t falling for and TikTok users lost it. The item has jokingly been referred to as a recession indicator as many can’t afford large splurges, and instead, opt for small doses of joy that light your inner child ablaze.

What about you? What’s the propaganda you refuse to fall for?
